{"id":85,"date":"2010-10-28T14:09:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-28T14:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geoplanit.co.uk\/?p=85"},"modified":"2010-10-28T14:09:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-28T14:09:00","slug":"kindle-post-gets-me-on-the-radio-bbc-cumbria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/?p=85","title":{"rendered":"#Kindle post gets me on the radio (#BBC #Cumbria)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMl_F086byI\/AAAAAAAAELA\/6vrtU7jn2F0\/s1600\/bbc_cumbria_bigger.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMl_F086byI\/AAAAAAAAELA\/6vrtU7jn2F0\/s1600\/bbc_cumbria_bigger.jpg?w=696\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Well my post on <a href=\"http:\/\/geoplanit.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/my-little-kindle-hidden-feature-post.html\">Kindle&#8217;s hidden features<\/a> certainly surprised me on the statistics front, what I didn&#8217;t expect was to appear on radio in part because of it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday (27th October) I got phoned at work by a chap called John Bowness, who asked whether I would like to come on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p003nmkk\">Mike Parr&#8217;s breakfast show on BBC Radio Cumbria<\/a>, to talk about &#8216;ereaders&#8217;. &nbsp;He said it would be at 7.45am this morning (28th October) and would last for 5 to 10 minutes. &nbsp; He said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/profile\/lucymangan\">Lucy Mangan<\/a> a Guardian&nbsp;Columnist&nbsp;would be talking about how she didn&#8217;t approve of ereaders and I would be there in defence of them. &nbsp; It was amusing to be asked whether my Kindle made noises so that it could be heard on radio! &nbsp; Unfortunatley it doesn&#8217;t make beeps and I thought it unwise to mention the text to speech feature&#8230; (not exactly its best selling point)<\/p>\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMmB5pBd9_I\/AAAAAAAAELc\/O64JSKP6X68\/s1600\/carlisle_castle_bridge.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMmB5pBd9_I\/AAAAAAAAELc\/O64JSKP6X68\/s1600\/carlisle_castle_bridge.jpg?w=696\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">These lifts are never working&#8230; (source Google)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>He said he had found me by typing in &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;q=ereader+cumbria\">ereader cumbria<\/a>&#8221; in Google and my blog GeoPlanIT came up top of the list (try it and let me know if it works for you!). &nbsp;So okay looking at the post that comes up its actually a link for downloading this site for an ereader (<a href=\"http:\/\/geoplanit.blogspot.com\/p\/got-ereader.html\">check it out here<\/a>). &nbsp; However I don&#8217;t think I would be so prominently listed in google if it weren&#8217;t so popular my original Kindle post, combined with my activities on twitter.<\/p>\n<p>My first instinct was to say no, those of you who know me will understand I&#8217;m not that shy and am somewhat outgoing. &nbsp; However I can assure you I go weak at the knees at the thought of public speaking! &nbsp; Then a little voice in my head said &#8220;why not, you don&#8217;t get the chance to go on radio everyday&#8221; &nbsp;this time the little voices in my head won out.<\/p>\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMmB4yMhYYI\/AAAAAAAAELY\/Cf4TklW6pWg\/s1600\/carlisle_castle.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMmB4yMhYYI\/AAAAAAAAELY\/Cf4TklW6pWg\/s1600\/carlisle_castle.jpg?w=696\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The lifts didn&#8217;t work then either<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Fortunately&nbsp;I was somewhat prepared for my appearance thanks to a friend of mine&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mattdeegan.com\/\">Matt Deegan<\/a>&nbsp;who works in the radio industry. &nbsp;His calm reassurance in the form of an email was much appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>So this morning I went to BBC Radio Cumbria in Carlisle with my wife and 16 month old&nbsp;daughter (moral support in reception). &nbsp; We had to take the detour from the Castle carpark as pushchairs and that bridge don&#8217;t work!<\/p>\n<p>You can listen to it here:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/bbc.in\/dr6EaX\">My 6-7 minutes of fame on BBC Radio Cumbria<\/a>&nbsp;(1hour 18 minutes in)<\/p>\n<p>So barring my hopeless performance (hey its my first time), I was surprised that there was no discussion, I thought that&#8217;s what Lucy was there for and the whole thing went by so quickly I was out of the building as before I knew it and struggling to cross <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Qg9L\">Castle Way in Carlisle<\/a> (I think they&#8217;ve given up on those elevators on the bridge)&#8230;<\/p>\n<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/goog_1659221581\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMmL7qCjs_I\/AAAAAAAAELg\/oc7QEOhdOHI\/s1600\/fluffybums_logo.png?w=696\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluffybums.co.uk\/\">Good luck going 100% internet!<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>One last thing I noticed: I was on directly after the owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluffybums.co.uk\/\">Fluffy Bums<\/a>, who are located next door to BBC Cumbria and it&#8217;s where we got our daughters&nbsp;reusable&nbsp;nappies from. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a shame they are closing down the shop and going 100% internet as we always enjoy going in and getting our &#8216;poop&#8217; related supplies!
