{"id":84,"date":"2010-10-26T14:08:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-26T14:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geoplanit.co.uk\/?p=84"},"modified":"2010-10-26T14:08:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-26T14:08:00","slug":"urbandesign-planning-making-the-rules-up-as-i-go-along-via-cityengine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/?p=84","title":{"rendered":"#UrbanDesign &amp; #Planning: Making the rules up as I go along (via #CityEngine)"},"content":{"rendered":"<table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMbccSv-GzI\/AAAAAAAAEKY\/fxUGNnV9EwA\/s1600\/cityengine_testing.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_Yz9w28cDOmU\/TMbccSv-GzI\/AAAAAAAAEKY\/fxUGNnV9EwA\/s1600\/cityengine_testing.jpg?w=696\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Now to get those rules sorted out &#8230;.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Just a quick update on what I&#8217;m up to&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>With the latest release of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.procedural.com\/\">CityEngine <\/a>I&#8217;ve come back and downloaded the trial to have another go after my <a href=\"http:\/\/geoplanit.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/city-making-with-sketchup.html\">previous attempt left me a little stumped<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Well this time round I&#8217;m looking seriously at using&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.procedural.com\/\">CityEngine&nbsp;<\/a>as part of our work flow. &nbsp; I see real potential for it to change how we go about creating urban area plans as well as presenting them at the end.<\/p>\n<p>The main problem for small firms like the one I work for (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.garsdaledesign.co.uk\/\">Garsdale Design Limited<\/a>) is time. &nbsp; Time spent laying out new urban areas to fit in with population projections and Planning Standards (if that&#8217;s how you want to do it). &nbsp;&nbsp;Larger firms have more resources to pull in to work on the&nbsp;repetitive&nbsp;tasks, but as a smaller firm we don&#8217;t have that luxury.<\/p>\n<p>What could happen here is to take the mundane part of the job and allow for creativity to be focused on key areas\/spaces and buildings whilst knowing that the street and residential layouts with appropriate servicing are all being done automatically, based on our special rule book! <\/p>\n<p>CityEngine doesn&#8217;t do everything but you do have full control for example, it allows you to drag your street network and rebuild plots automatically and on the fly&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So how am I doing this time around? Much better, the interface has I think improved and it feels less buggy. &nbsp;I&#8217;d still like to see more clearly laid out manual and tutorials, but I guess all this is easier if you come from a programming back ground.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.procedural.com\/showcases\/showcase.html\">For Examples of CityEngine&#8217;s potential in planning have a look at their showcases:<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now to get those rules sorted out &#8230;.
