Cumbria CC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cumbria as a geographic area I think has a lot of online maps and they all vary in quality and\u00a0usability. \u00a0 Sometimes it looks like the people who are operating them haven&#8217;t told other departments what they are doing&#8230;. to be fair they probably have but red tape has got in the way&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Lets take\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.co.uk\/maps?q=sedbergh&amp;hl=en&amp;sll=53.800651,-4.064941&amp;sspn=8.375259,22.390137&amp;t=h&amp;hnear=Sedbergh,+Cumbria,+United+Kingdom&amp;z=15\">Sedbergh<\/a>\u00a0(yes I used Google Maps!) for example, if I want to see what services my local authorities&#8217; provide on a map I can go here for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.cumbria.gov.uk\/\">Cumbria CC services<\/a>\u00a0but if I want to see their Public Rights of Way mapping (and the two national parks),<a href=\"http:\/\/hims.cumbria.gov.uk\/WIP2\/?cg=prow\">\u00a0I have to go here<\/a>. \u00a0Now Cumbria also has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cumbria.gov.uk\/planning-environment\/countryside\/historic-environment\/HER_online.asp\">a Historic Environment Record<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gis1.cumbria.gov.uk\/eggp\/custom\/shell\/launcher.asp\">their mapping is here<\/a>\u00a0(seriously slow &amp; doesn&#8217;t always work).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_613\" id=\"caption-attachment-624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cumbria&#8217;s Historic Environment Record mapping is shit, no really<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now here&#8217;s the fun bit,<a href=\"http:\/\/webgis.southlakeland.gov.uk\/webgis\/bingis.html\"> bins, building control and libraries are dealt with by South Lakeland DC\u00a0<\/a>. \u00a0 Ah, but if I want to see my local plan online rather than via PDF I have to go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/gis.nationalparks.gov.uk\/Map\/map.asp?txtfind=&amp;layer=YDNPA-NPC&amp;Geoset=YDNPA\">Yorkshire Dales online GIS here.<\/a> \u00a0 Oh and if I forget what Local Authority I&#8217;m in <a href=\"http:\/\/eforms.eden.gov.uk\/edenmap\/Welcome.aspx\">Eden DC provide some mapping for part of Sedbergh too<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption-text\">South Lakeland&#8217;s mapping just like Barrow&#8217;s and I quite like it..<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All these maps provide detailed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk\/oswebsite\/products\/os-mastermap\/index.html\">OS Mastermap level mapping<\/a>. \u00a0Some are symbolised quite well, others not so well, I&#8217;ve always liked<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barrowbc.gov.uk\/default.aspx?page=1629\"> Barrow&#8217;s online GIS<\/a> which South Lakeland seem to use, but that&#8217;s because it&#8217;s a bit technical <a href=\"http:\/\/new.lga.gov.uk\/lga\/aio\/20246680\">and I hear open source<\/a>\u00a0[PDF]. \u00a0 I also worry when watermarks aren&#8217;t done well.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>As a resident I shouldn&#8217;t have to check 5 different online maps to check out what&#8217;s happening in my area. \u00a0I certainly\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t\u00a0have to learn how each one operates!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(look I used <strong>bold<\/strong> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">underline<\/span> I must be serious)<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t help wondering why no one is trying to get a national government mapping organisation whereby everyone gets the same online mapping frontend\/interface but is in charge of their own data.
