Just plot the thick black lines and you\u2019re done.\u00a0\u00a0 Well this is a country with a hot desert environment and a poor quality road network.\u00a0\u00a0 To compound matters there is a high water table, and places where there is no underground sewer network.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_210\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-210\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/plotting_the_informal.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-210\" title=\"Digitizing the Informal\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/plotting_the_informal.jpg?resize=300%2C216\" alt=\"satellite image of informal road network\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/plotting_the_informal.jpg?resize=300%2C216&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/plotting_the_informal.jpg?resize=1%2C1&amp;ssl=1 1w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/plotting_the_informal.jpg?w=655&amp;ssl=1 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Informal Road Networks - but how do you record them?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The upshot of this is there are many informal road networks, even in the \u2018developed\u2019 neighbourhoods.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s quite easy sometimes to make a good guess as to the line of a road based on the housing.\u00a0 But the road accessing a particular development can be erratic taking account of features and circumstances I cannot see from my satellite image (soft sand for instance).\u00a0\u00a0 What\u2019s more how am I to know that this is a permanent road?\u00a0\u00a0 Sure it looks fairly set now but come the next season it will all change.<\/p>\n<p>My general approach is to first establish what kind of project I\u2019m working on and what information is required for the job.\u00a0\u00a0 Here I am choosing to acknowledge the existence of these informal tracks, especially the ones that look heavily used.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m also ensuring that the lines I\u2019m creating have appropriate information about the feature for instance: \u201cinformal, access, unmade\u201d.\u00a0 I\u2019ll also add some meta data to ensure anyone in the future who finds my work knows what satellite image I digitized from and what date I plotted it and for what purpose.<\/p>\n<p>So fellow GIS professionals (particularly the ones that like to digitize) how do you digitize yours?\u00a0 I\u2019d really appreciate your insight if you could leave a comment or dm me on twitter that would be great!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m doing some digitizing for a project in the office, basically I\u2019m plotting the entire road network in a city environment.\u00a0\u00a0 This sounds easy doesn\u2019t it?
