{"id":1188,"date":"2013-09-12T14:30:58","date_gmt":"2013-09-12T14:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/?p=1188"},"modified":"2013-10-18T14:13:59","modified_gmt":"2013-10-18T14:13:59","slug":"its-all-in-the-mix-real-urban-3d-gis-data-as-well-as-procedural-models","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/?p=1188","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s all in the mix&#8230; Real urban 3D  &#038; GIS data as well as procedural models"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve recently been able to get my hands on some beautiful <strong>real urban 3D<\/strong> data from the guys at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cybercity3d.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CyberCity3D<\/a>. \u00a0 These guys can take stereo imagery of any area and work some magic and give you back a 3D model for pretty much any 3D modeller package you need. \u00a0 They&#8217;re really keen on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/software\/cityengine\" target=\"_blank\">CityEngine <\/a>at the moment and their data works really well with your rule files, so you know why I&#8217;m looking at this stuff!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1191\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1191\" style=\"text-align: center;\" alt=\"ce_sample_data\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/ce_sample_data.jpg?resize=445%2C419\" width=\"445\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/ce_sample_data.jpg?w=741&amp;ssl=1 741w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/ce_sample_data.jpg?resize=300%2C282&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What do I do with it once I&#8217;ve got it in CityEngine?!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The real skill is merging all this real 3D models, with GIS data and procedural buildings and models generated in CityEngine. \u00a0 This is where you start to realise how amazing CityEngine is purely in terms of the 2D and 3D data formats it handles. \u00a0Within in 10 minutes I went from raw 3D data and some rule files to something I don&#8217;t mind putting onto a webscene.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1190\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1190\" style=\"width: 591px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1190\" alt=\"ce_sample_data1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/ce_sample_data1.jpg?resize=591%2C574\" width=\"591\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/ce_sample_data1.jpg?w=591&amp;ssl=1 591w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/ce_sample_data1.jpg?resize=300%2C291&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Resist the urge to flood your city model. &#8220;just because you can&#8221; is not a business case.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With all this power comes great responsibility I heard once, well just because I have all this data and the ability to combine it, it doesn&#8217;t mean I should combine it all, does it? \u00a0 Obviously we now have to start thinking about <strong>3D cartography<\/strong> (I&#8217;m looking at you <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PetersonGIS\" target=\"_blank\">@PetersonGIS<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kennethfield\" target=\"_blank\">@kennethfield<\/a>!) what is the appropriate level of detail for your project, do pastels work in 3D?
