I&#8217;m just gathering the bits of <strong>publicly available knowledge<\/strong> together in one place, a large part from one recent CityEngine seminar (<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 13px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cgarchitect.com\/2013\/05\/webinar-creating-smart-3d-city-models-with-esri-cityengine\">http:\/\/www.cgarchitect.com\/2013\/05\/webinar-creating-smart-3d-city-models-with-esri-cityengine<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">).\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">None of what I write about below has come from a confidential source and no one has told me directly what&#8217;s coming to CityEngine or ESRI&#8217;s 3D stuff.\u00a0\u00a0 The analysis bit is my own opinion and what I&#8217;ve gathered from a number of sources none of them have been from ESRI.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">ESRI staff seem to be a bit cagey about telling me what&#8217;s coming in CityEngine 2013, much to my frustration,<em> it&#8217;s hard to plan a project when you&#8217;re not sure about what features are being improved or even removed in the next release!\u00a0<\/em> I worry because CityEngine at present is so versatile I fear that any &#8216;improvements&#8217; for one industry (like the movie industry) may scupper it&#8217;s use in my industry.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Ah well that is a worry with all software, except of course most software has competitors, CityEngine I don&#8217;t believe has. <strong>Skip to the end for my quick analysis of it all&#8230; <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><strong>click on!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What I know<\/h2>\n<p><em>First up I&#8217;ve been told that the expected release date is sometime in <del><strong>July 2013\u00a0<\/strong><\/del><strong> October 2013(?)<\/strong>, I&#8217;ve been told that this is a big release with many improvements and changes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Taken form an article quoting Gert Van Maren <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com.au\/article\/525998\/tech_behind_man_steel_metropolis_coming_developer_near\/\">&#8220;Tech behind Man of Steel&#8217;s Mertopolis Coming to a developer near you&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The new version of CityEngine will include an SDK that will let developers incorporate the product&#8217;s procedural generation technology in their own products, such as games, said Gert van Maren, who is Esri&#8217;s product manager for 3D and based out of the company&#8217;s R&amp;D centre in Z\u00fcrich, Switzerland.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Also a mobile viewer is coming as well as future plans are talked of as well:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In addition to adding an SDK for developers to employ CityEngine&#8217;s technology in their own products, in CityEngine 2013 Esri is adding the ability to display visualisations created with the software on mobile devices such as iPads and smartphones. for your rule files and can be distributed for free &#8220;get your rules out there&#8221; GITHUB sharing and collaborating rules with other developers as well.<\/p>\n<p>Software Development Kit<\/p>\n<p>Street improvements : &#8220;our interstates much better, parking and other elements as well&#8221; Urban Design<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/?attachment_id=1223\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1223\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1223\" alt=\"Screenshot 2013-09-28 12.36.16\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Screenshot-2013-09-28-12.36.16.png?resize=614%2C345\" width=\"614\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Screenshot-2013-09-28-12.36.16.png?resize=1024%2C575&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Screenshot-2013-09-28-12.36.16.png?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Screenshot-2013-09-28-12.36.16.png?w=1366&amp;ssl=1 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Update: 64bit only for CityEngine, no 32bit&#8230;. see this for details\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownloads2.esri.com%2Fsupport%2FTechArticles%2FDEPRECATION_PLAN_FOR_ARCGIS_101_and_102_update_for_10_2_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Deprecation Plan for ArcGIS (CityEngine bit added 16th of September 2013)<\/a>\u00a0(PDF)<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What I&#8217;m hoping for (but no one has said anything about)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Specific lot widths not just minimums<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Specific areas of lots not just minimum\/maximum<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Better management of lots at corners, allow for right angled roads not just curves (yes some urban designers need that).<\/li>\n<li>Easier writing of rules into object attributes<\/li>\n<li>tight integration with ArcGIS in particular road plotting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Analysis<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Rule packages,<\/strong> like mxd packages and layer packages in concept, in that I mean you&#8217;ll have one file with all you need textures models and rules in one place.\u00a0\u00a0 The only difference?\u00a0\u00a0 This won&#8217;t just be a zip file (like layer packages).\u00a0\u00a0 The stated aim of this is so us that can write rule files can sell our hard earned coding to people without CGA knowledge and they won&#8217;t be able to disassemble it and sell it on.\u00a0\u00a0<em> This paves the way for companies selling specific rule sets for regions and countries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Texture and asset libraries<\/strong> I hope by this that they mean that instead of having to copy in assets and textures for each new project they are part of a global library with some pre built in assets and then the ability to add your own project\/work specific libraries<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Urban Design and Planning Toolkit<\/strong> they refer to seems to be just a well documented rule set which includes to pre-built reporting.\u00a0 Basically a more advanced example project for you to modify.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plugins!\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Use the CityEngine API stuff to build in procedrual functionality to your favourite 3D modelling package, I wonder if someone will do it for SketchUP?\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m guessing this is something movie studios have been begging for, so it doesn&#8217;t disrupt they&#8217;re project &#8216;pipelines&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Through this <strong>API<\/strong> stuff though it looks like CityEngine functions are coming to <strong>ArcGIS<\/strong> soon, but it does leave the way open for <strong>QGIS<\/strong> to call on CityEngine as well&#8230;. hmmm I like that idea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Improvements in the user interface<\/strong> are welcome, I hope it works but is not to drastic.\u00a0\u00a0 Improving 3D editing tools means I may not have to use SketchUp as often.\u00a0\u00a0 But I hope the CityEngine don&#8217;t get to distracted by these features, other programs do this better.\u00a0 However I do like being able to turn a procedurally created building into a mesh and editing it all within CityEngine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDK &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong> ESRI is really hoping to get this product in use by many other industries, this I expect will be a product almost as important as ArcGIS to ESRI.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1203\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1203\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/?attachment_id=1203\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1203\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1203\" alt=\"smarterbettercities\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/smarterbettercities.png?resize=300%2C89\" width=\"300\" height=\"89\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Will CityEngine&#8217;s new capabilities effect companies like this?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Mobile Viewer<\/strong> &#8211; I&#8217;ve been crying out for this for months! \u00a0As professionals we need to show our clients our work and we can&#8217;t always take our laptops with us! \u00a0 A tablet viewer would be perfect, just as long as they have add offline viewing capabilities! \u00a0For iOS and Android please! \u00a0 If you want this sort of thing now a company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smarterbettercities.ch\/\">called SmarterBetterCities could help you out.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Augmented Reality<\/strong> &#8211; I know this sounds fun, but I think let ESRI should let other developers should do this sort of stuff. \u00a0 ESRI should be about authoritative data and mapping, I&#8217;m not sure any <em>needs<\/em> augmented reality. \u00a0 Perhaps they just need to talk to someone like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inglobetechnologies.com\/en\/\">AR-Media\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>64Bit only<\/strong> &#8211; The new version is going to only be released in 64bit? \u00a0Well it had to happen as they look to creating massive cities with this program. \u00a0 But is there some core change or is it just for ease of development? \u00a0I have no idea as I&#8217;m not a programmer&#8230; and &#8220;huge city models&#8221;.\u00a0 \u00a0This is pointing to a new or improved 3D project that ESRI must be working on.\u00a0 Perhaps linking in with these &#8220;Living Atlas&#8221; ideas of Jack Dangermond (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/esri-insider\/2013\/05\/21\/a-living-atlas-of-the-world\/\">http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/esri-insider\/2013\/05\/21\/a-living-atlas-of-the-world\/<\/a>) and Arcgis online and the webgl functions.\u00a0\u00a0 As stated the web scene export is for limited client specific models, but something bigger is coming.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><strong>Are we looking at a live 3D globe\/atlas that only needs a certain web browser, or are we looking at a whole new program?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>So what is it?<\/strong> My feeling is that ArcGlobe and ArcScene are no longer fit for purpose in this new 3D\/web GIS era. \u00a0Is ArcGIS Explorer capable? \u00a0 Well my experience of it doesn&#8217;t suggest so.\u00a0\u00a0 However ESRI is investing in the cloud GIS and using web scenes via WebGL technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are we looking at a live 3D globe\/atlas that only needs a certain web browser, or are we looking at a whole new program?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 CityEngine handles 3D really well and is 64bit and runs on many platforms.\u00a0 In fact when I export my models to ArcGlobe ArcScene or ArcExplorer I instantly regret it.\u00a0\u00a0 I guess I&#8217;ve been spoilt by Google Earth&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it, new stuff for CityEngine in <strong>July<\/strong>, but I think there are wider implications of ESRI&#8217;s purchase of CityEngine to come. \u00a0 Namely we&#8217;re going to have the ability to host somewhere (within arcgis online) \u00a0massive 3D models made by CityEngine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m really looking forward to the new release and whatever ESRI has planned in the future&#8230;..<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Updated: On the 29\/09\/20013 &#8211;
