{"id":102,"date":"2011-02-25T14:51:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-25T14:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/geoplanit.co.uk\/?p=102"},"modified":"2013-02-28T09:50:55","modified_gmt":"2013-02-28T09:50:55","slug":"top-tip-creating-a-folder-contents-list-in-a-simple-text-file","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.geoplanit.co.uk\/?p=102","title":{"rendered":"Top Tip: Creating a folder contents list in a simple text file"},"content":{"rendered":"<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-wcwUqG4F6PE\/TWfA5uWvm6I\/AAAAAAAAEo0\/n55rVG1i_nU\/s1600\/cmd_prompt.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-wcwUqG4F6PE\/TWfA5uWvm6I\/AAAAAAAAEo0\/n55rVG1i_nU\/s320\/cmd_prompt.jpg?resize=320%2C163\" width=\"320\" height=\"163\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">I have to use the keyboard?!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Updated 28\/02\/2012 to amend the syntax and remove instructions on making an xls file (Excel opens plain text files anyway)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coming to the end of a project I realised I needed to create a table listing all of the files and folders within for that project.<\/p>\n<p>This was a GIS (using ArcGIS) with many MXDs and associated data files, so the prospect of manually creating a list was a non-starter for me.<\/p>\n<p>As with most discoveries laziness has been the driving factor in today&#8217;s &#8220;top tip&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>So I did a little research and with the helpful post located at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.handyexceltips.com\/2008\/03\/05\/generating-list-of-the-contents-of-any-folder\/\">HandyExcelTips.com<\/a>\u00a0found the perfect solution that has been around forever. \u00a0 To be honest I don&#8217;t know why I haven&#8217;t known about this as it seems quite a simple request&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>These instructions have been tried on Windows Vista only but I&#8217;m pretty sure Windows XP and 7 (works on Windows 7) will work just as well. \u00a0\u00a0If not let me know in the comments section below! \u00a0\u00a0The usual disclaimers about don&#8217;t try this if you&#8217;re not sure apply.<\/p>\n<p>Okay so here is how to do it (step 1 for a list with all the heading and summary info and step 2 to just have a list):<\/p>\n<p><b>Step 1 Create a simple text or Excel file listing files and folder in a particular folder:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click start and in the <i>start search<\/i>\u00a0text box type &#8220;cmd&#8221; and hit &#8216;enter&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Next type in the Command Prompt box to change your location to the desire folder you wanted to make a list from e.g.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>cd d:\\test\\list<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Now to create a text file (which you can open in Excel) with the contents of the folder you have navigated to type this in:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>dir &gt; filelist.txt<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now you can use file explorer to open your file and folder list, with either Excel or Notepad!<\/p>\n<p><b>Step 2 Create a simple text listing all sub-files and folders and without the header information or summary:<\/b><br \/>\nFollowing the first 2 steps above type this instead:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>dir \u00a0\/s\/b &gt; filelist.txt<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not rocket science I know but I have found it very useful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have to use the keyboard?!
